Let’s just check the rear brakes and see if we can find the source of that noise. What could go wrong?

Fuckity-fuck-fuck. That’s the second time a stud has broken on that wheel. The nut was on so tight; this is what happens when the garage monkey powers the nuts on with the gun.

On the up side, although I didn’t get the wheel off this side, the other side did work. I’m of the o pinion that my parking brake (which was recently verified and adjusted) was stuck on. With the brake applied and one wheel in the air, there is zero evidence that the brake works. So add that to the list of problems.

I keep trying to do work myself, because garages cost money, and shit like this keeps happening. It’s starting to get on my nerves. I don’t have a garage or a lot of tools, so most jobs are beyond my reach, but when even the simple things go wrong, you wonder if you’re on the right path.

And here I was a few months ago telling a friend I'd like to quit my job and be a mechanic. Oooooo boy.

shit like that happens to mechanics all the time too.... they just have a convenient pile of spare studs on site

pretty sure the most common phrase in any workshop is ah...shit (insert any expletive really)

Yep... this is one of the things that really pisses me off.

Many mechanics can’t or won’t use a proper torque wrench to tighten the wheel lug nuts.

Sucks but shit breaks. It's more depressing when you don't tighten them enough or better yet when it falls off the jack.

Those are, what, 6-lug wheels? Eh, you still got about 83% wheel retention left . I f it was my only vehicle, I would probably still drive it (carefully) to the parts s tore to pick up new stud(s).

Think about it like this: if it was a lug bolt it would have snapped off in the hole.

It looks like the stud was rusty. I bet you were using a breaker bar or tire iron to break those free. If so, I once broke 2 out of 3 with an iron and gave up. I had my buddy come over with an impact and the remaining 17 came off with no drama. Using an impact makes a difference.

Yes I was using a tire iron. I have an impact but forget to take it out most of the time...

The stud might have been rusty but I know it was hammered on too tight.

Last fall I got 20 new lug bolts on the VW because the tire shop over- tightened them. After I failed to remove them, and a garage failed, I went to the dealer. Not sure what magic they used, but there was no way the old bolts were going back on!

The timing is bad. My wife needs the truck on Monday, but I won’t let her drive it with the kids where they need to go. Since get car is already booked for recall service, we have to borrow a car. It's mostly just annoying.

Yep. Now we need to borrow a car for next Monday.

And it happened late enough in the afternoon that I couldn’t call my dealer garage (they close early on Friday) , and the independent garages weren’t answering the phone!

Professional mechanics use lifts and high powered impact wrenches.

The right tools make wrenching a lot more pleasant and less disastrous. :)

Had a cowo rker drive for years with 15/20 total on his car. The good news is that it was 3 wheels missing one and one missing two, and those two were not immediately next to each other, but still seems like a bad idea on a part that can be replaced cheaply.

Unprofessional mechanics often have access to the same equipment, but a disinterest in using them properly!

This job will need to be finished by a proper mechanic, but I'll keep looking for opportunities to practice.

yes i’m serious, why?

1 . vehicle is already there

2 . hub needs to come apart to tap the one wheel  stud in, i’m guessing the vehicle is quite a few years old?

therefore eliminate the risk of breaking mor e from metal fatigue by doing them all now.

Ok, I’m not an expert so that’s why I was asking. The truck is 13 years old and I’ve already replaced 1 stud on that hub (lost when offroading 1.5 years ago).

Maybe true, maybe not. If the threads are dirty, they seize and an impact seems the only way to take them off. Obviously they twisted when you took them off. If they twist, are they too tight?

Granted, I think an impact with a torque stick my get them tighter than with a hand wrench, but I think if they are put on with an impact, they almost need to come off with one too when the threads are rusty/dirty.

X2 on this. The bulk of the labour in changing a stud is disassembly and  reassembly, pressing them in and out is easy, and grand scheme they’re not super expensive parts. Plus if one sustained damage, the others probably did as well, and they worked harder to compensate for the broken one. If you need to replace one, you replace them all.
